“Riding the crest of globalization and technology, English dominates the world as no other language ever has, and some linguists now say it may never be dethroned as the king of languages.”
English has been the dominating language for a long time and keeps spreading until today. A great deal of countries use the language as their second language and where ever you go today you will find English speaking people. The language has spread out in the last years and the reasons behind this are different but one of the main causes is the internet. People use the internet for a variety of reasons and it is always easier to communicate in English when using the internet, other things as browsing and shopping are also done in English mostly, some websites just don’t have the translate button and even if they do it’s only to a limited amount of languages. On the other hand we have education, most schools teach English today as a part of their courses. Finally we have the media and these are things such as BBC World and the times, these have a great influence.
Although English has been dominating for a long time now it can’t possibly remain with no competition, nothing can. People have forgotten Latin today, funnily enough there is absolutely no country in the world that speaks Latin today. It is of course argued that it developed to a number of languages but it that really enough considering its past state. Latin was once the world’s dominating language with no competition, at the height of the Roman Empire Latin was spoken in most of Europe, Asia and North Africa, I am sure people back then thought that Latin will always remain the world’s first language. The majority of people think that English is the largest language by native speakers, well guess what IT AINT! It is in fact in the third position after Mandarin and Spanish. Finally unlike Latin at its time English does have competition which is Mandarin which have been growing very fast in Asia.
In conclusion, it is not easy to predict whether the state of the English language will be stable, although English has reached a level that no other language ever has there are means that were not available before such as the internet. These same means that change the state of any other language very fast.
